  1. Bartok, Bela 1881-1945. Hungarian composer.
  2. Regarded as a child prodigy, he studied music
  3. at the Budapest Conservatory, later working
  4. with Kodaly in recording and and transcribing
  5. local folk music for a government project.
  6. This led him to develop a personal musical
  7. language combining folk elements with
  8. mathematical concepts of tone and rhythmic
  9. proportion. His large output includes six
  10. string quartets, a ballet The Miraculous
  11. Mandarin 1919, which was banned because of
  12. its subject matter, concertos, an opera, and
  13. graded teaching pieces for piano. He died in
  14. the USA having fled from Hungary in 1940.
